Life in Berlin

L
Berlin is such a liveable city…

It’s been ages since I’ve published a blog. I think I’ve only written 3 this year.

But I haven’t forgotten you, or vanished in a desert somewhere.

It’s just that I haven’t been traveling at all. We moved to Berlin at the start of January, and I haven’t left the city since.

To steal an image from Lawrence Durrell, I guess you could say we’re de-barbarizing and re-gilding after life in Malta.

I’m hard at work on a new book. And I’ve written more in 3 or 4 months here than I did in 6 years on the island.

The first draft is finished, and I’m about to start rewrites.

So yeah, Berlin life is pretty routine…

There’s writing in the morning…

Hard at work on my new book…

Exhibits for inspiration…

Soaking up the art of Jonas Burgert at Blain-Southern…

A nice park on sunny Sundays…

Just another summer Sunday in the Tiergarten…

Which usually leads to a beer garden…

Every park seems to lead to a biergarten…

Or ice cream…

Sampling the cones at Mos Eisley in Neukölln…

And reading and films in the evenings…

There’s always so much to read…

Click “repeat”, add a visit to the gym 3 times a week, and you’ve got my quiet bookish routine.

Of course there’s also the occasional late Sunday breakfast…

A late Sunday breakfast at Ungeheuer in Neukölln…

Great ethnic food…

Great ramen at Takumi NINE in Prenzlauer Berg…
…or Ethiopian at Bejte near Nollendorfplatz…

And a classic cocktail in the city’s best bars…

Victoria Bar on Potsdamerstrasse shakes up some of Berlin’s best classic cocktails…

And that’s really about it.

I hope to get back out on the road soon. The travel bug definitely has me in its grip.

In the meantime, I’ll try to share some more stuff with you about the book, the process, and the interesting things I’ve discovered along the way.

…more to come… stay tuned…

  • You look great my old friend. Send me a line will ya. I have been trying to track you down for along time.

    • Hey Muhammad, good to hear from you. I lost track of your changing email addresses ages ago. But drop me a line through my website. Hope you’re well.

  • Oh Ryan, you are now entering the realm of the middle aged writer. That is how most of the rest of us senescent writers live our lives… immersed in our work but leaving time to escape through the wonders of lives lived, all around us.
You my dear, are a different breed of writer, the kind with wanderlust in your blood. I have no doubt you will return to your unique travels to weird and wonderful places, but I am comforted by the notion that you have ventured into my cloistered writer’s world in order to focus completely on your next book. As always, I wish you great success.
    With affection and respect

    • Thanks Reva. I’ve needed a long period of quiet writing and reading, that was completely lacking in Malta. I’m getting the itch to travel again — and we’ve got some trips in mind. But I plan to use these Berlin years to crank out 3 or 4 long overdue books, this is such a great place to work.

  • Ryan, you made your best choice when you left dirty and corrupt Malta. It’s a shit hole that by some coincidence is in the EU. Enjoy your life in a normal country away from barbarism, shabbiness, an urban jungle, and corruption.

    • Thanks Craig. Malta has changed a lot, even during the years I lived there. I’m still following the news daily, but I’ll be glad to get this book done so I can put it out of my mind and move on. The world is so large, and so filled with possibilities. Too large to spend this short life in a place like that.
